Tragedy Looms over Joy

Hello all! It’s your favorite Sen. Angela Mosley. I’m here with an update on what’s happened in the Senate this week. Before that though, I feel the need to discuss the tragedy that occurred in Kansas City.

Happy smiles turned to terror when gunshots were fired at the Kansas City Chiefs’ victory celebration. At least one person was killed, and over twenty were injured during a time that was meant to be filled with joy. Tragedies like this are why I have sponsored my Senate Bill 971 which is meant to help prevent these sort of tragedies by limiting the purchases of assault weapons and limit those under 21 from buying firearms if they have a juvenile record or mental illness. Yet this important bill has not been scheduled to be heard in committee. I mean to correct that in the coming week.

In the Senate, I stood with the minority caucus against legislation that would make it harder for Missouri voters to directly pass laws through the Initiative Petition process. I believe Senate Joint Resolution 74 would eliminate the “one person, one vote” tradition that has stood for over 100 years, and allow for some people’s vote to count more than others, depending on where they live. If you ask me, this legislation is a first step away from democracy and towards silencing voters. I plan to continue to stand against this bill whenever it is brought back to the floor for discussion. I will always fight to protect your vote and ensure your voice is heard.

I will keep you updated on the progress I make representing you here in the Senate and will continue to fight for the things I know are right.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact my offices or swing by if you find yourself in Jefferson City.
