Senator Ben Brown’s Bill to Provide Medical Certification Submission Alternatives Signed into Law

JEFFERSON CITY – Missourians who wish to apply or renew a Commercial Drivers License (CDL) will now have more options for submitting their medical certification, thanks to a bill sponsored by Sen. Ben Brown, R-Washington, and signed into law by the governor on June 7. Senate Bill 167 authorizes the medical examiners’ certificates required to attain a CDL to be submitted to the state via mail, fax or email, in addition the currently accepted in-person and electronic methods.

“I filed this legislation to reduce red tape and help address labor shortages within the trucking industry,” said Sen. Brown. “This new law will help professional drivers stay on the road while reducing unprecedented supply chain disruptions.”

The provisions in SB 167 stem from a successful practice implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic which allowed for greater flexibility in the licensing process. The new law takes effect on Aug. 28.
