CURRENT BILL SUMMARY
SB 29 - This act prohibits an interscholastic athletic team sponsored or authorized by a public school or public charter school from allowing a student to compete in an athletic competition sponsored or authorized by the school that is designated for the biological sex opposite to the biological sex of the student as correctly stated on the student's birth certificate or other government record. An interscholastic team may allow a female student to compete in a competition designated for male students if a corresponding competition for female students is not offered or available.
The parent or guardian of a minor student, or a student over the age of 18, who is deprived of an athletic opportunity as a result of a violation of this act shall have a cause of action for injunctive or other equitable relief, as well as payment of attorney's fees, costs, and expenses of the parent, guardian, or student.
