CURRENT BILL SUMMARY
SB 620 - Current law grants authority to the State Board of Education to develop a statewide assessment system to determine the degree to which public school students in the state are proficient in meeting academic performance standards adopted by the State Board. This act repeals that provision and specifies that the State Board shall instead support schools and school districts in developing, modifying, and revising, as necessary, their own locally developed assessments, which shall meet certain criteria outlined in the act. The State Board shall adopt rules that identify and recognize a minimum of two national school accreditation agencies from which school districts may seek to obtain accreditation. The act repeals provisions of law relating to the State Board's authority to suggest criteria for a school to demonstrate that its students learn the knowledge, skills, and competencies measured by the statewide assessment system at exemplary levels. The act further repeals provisions relating to "Outstanding School Waivers" that exempt certain schools from meeting requirements related to the authority of the State Board to classify school districts.
This act is similar to provisions in HCS/HB 49 (2023) and to HB 1467 (2022).
