SS/SB 830 - Under this act, the Department of Health and Senior Services shall develop an educational pamphlet on nonopioid alternatives for the treatment of acute, subacute, and chronic pain and shall publish the pamphlet on its website. No later than January 1, 2025, and every two years thereafter, the Department shall distribute the most updated version of the pamphlet to local public health agencies and associations representing the state's federally qualified health centers, rural health clinics, and community mental health centers. Additionally, this act requires practitioners, before an initial opioid prescription and the third in a course of treatment for chronic pain, to make a reasonable effort to consult with the patient as to the risks of taking opioids and alternatives to opioids. The practitioner provide a copy of the Department's educational pamphlet or provide a link to the Department's website containing the pamphlet. The provisions of this act shall not apply to those in hospice or palliative care, in a long-term care facility, or receiving treatment for substance abuse or opioid dependence.
