HB 63 -- ASSAULT ON CORRECTIONS EMPLOYEES (Relford)

This bill requires that any inmate in the physical custody of
the Department of Corrections who commits third degree assault
against a corrections employee be placed in segregation for at
least one year.  Any inmate who commits second or first degree
assault against a corrections employee must be placed in
segregation for at least 3 years.

FISCAL NOTE:  No impact on state funds.

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Correctional and State Institutions by a vote of 18 to 0.

This bill requires that any inmate in the physical custody of
the Department of Corrections who commits third degree assault
against a corrections employee be placed in segregation for at
least one year.  Any inmate who commits second or first degree
assault against a corrections employee must be placed in
segregation for at least 3 years.

FISCAL NOTE:  No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say that with the number of assaults
which are occurring against corrections employees, it is time to
send a message that violence against these employees will not be
tolerated.

Testifying for the bill were Representative Relford; Department
of Corrections; and American Federation of State, County, and
Municipal Employees.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
