HB 458 -- School Calendar

Sponsor: Hagan-Harrell

This bill permits any school district to prepare a calendar of
200 days and 1,200 hours of attendance, divided into 4 10-week
quarters with 2 weeks between quarters, and 20 days for use as
holidays. The bill requires that every district have a year--
round program by July 1, 2002, and directs the Department of
Elementary and Secondary Education to assist with funding for
capital improvements and additional teachers' salaries. The
definition of average daily attendance, which currently contains
provisions to calculate the full-time equivalent of attendance
during summer school, is revised to delete that portion of the
calculation. Average daily attendance will be calculated by
dividing the total number of hours attended in a term by
resident pupils by the hours school was in session multiplied by
the hours of actual attendance divided by 1,044.
