Current Bill Summary

HCS/SB 270 - This act concerns the rights of funeral processions and the obligations of those responsible for them.

(1) Pedestrians and operators of vehicles are required to yield to a funeral procession, with exceptions for emergency vehicles and law enforcement;

(2) Vehicle operators within a funeral procession shall exercise the highest degree of care toward other vehicles and pedestrians;

(3) Procession drivers must have head and tail lights on;

(4) Funeral processions shall be exempt from road/bridge tolls;

(5) Other drivers are prohibited from driving between, joining or passing a funeral procession. Anyone violating these provisions shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not to exceed one hundred dollars.

(6) No ordinance or other law may prohibit a motorcycle escort of a funeral procession if the motorcycle has flashing amber lights;

(7) Municipalities may adopt ordinances similar to this act.

This act is similar to HB 691 (1999) and SB 836 (1998).
