Married Jane Sokobin Pheffer. They have five children: Brent, Randy, Terri, Mark and Becky; and seven grandchildren. He is a compliance officer for a wood products company. Elected to the Kansas City city council, 1975, 1979 and 1983.

Member: 32nd Degree Scottish Rite; Chamber of Commerce; Clay County Development Commission; Tri-County Community Health Board. Elected to the Senate: 1984-1992.
