Born August 22, 1959, in Kansas City. Graduated from Fayette High School in 1977, attended Central Methodist College (B.A., political science, 1981); University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Law (J.D., 1984).

Married December 2, 1989, to Martha Smith. They have a son, Benjamin Edward and a daughter, Catherine Ann. He is an attorney at law in St. Charles. Former: field representative, U.S. Congressman Ike Skelton; legal investigator, Missouri Attorney General's office; emergency medical technician, Howard County Ambulance Service.

Member: First United Methodist Church, St. Charles. Elected to the House: 1988-1992. Elected to the Senate: 1994.
