BILL SUMMARIES

HB 844 -- COUNTY PROSECUTORS (Richardson)

This bill replaces the current salary schedule for prosecutors
in second class counties.  Under this bill full-time prosecutors
in second and third class counties will receive the same
compensation as associate circuit judges.  The current salary
schedule for full-time prosecutors in third and fourth class
counties will apply to part-time prosecutors.  Prosecutors
currently serving may not have their salary lowered.

Upon voter approval, second and third class counties may require
the prosecuting attorney to be full-time.

FISCAL NOTE:  No impact on state funds.

COMMITTEE ACTION:  Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Local Government and Related Matters by a vote of 17  to 0.

This bill replaces the current salary schedule for prosecutors
in second class counties.  Under this bill full-time prosecutors
in second and third class counties will receive the same
compensation as associate circuit judges.  The current salary
schedule for full-time prosecutors in third and fourth class
counties will apply to part-time prosecutors.  Prosecutors
currently serving may not have their salary lowered.

Upon voter approval, second and third class counties may require
the prosecuting attorney to be full-time.

FISCAL NOTE:  No impact on state funds.

PROPONENTS:  Supporters say this bill would allow for a full--
time prosecutor in second and third class counties if approved
by a vote of the people.

Testifying for the bill was Representative Richardson.

OPPONENTS:  There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
