COMMITTEE
HB 547 -- SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBERS
SPONSOR: Gross
COMMITTEE ACTION: Voted "do pass by consent" by the Committee
on Judiciary by a vote of 9 to 0.
This bill prohibits the public disclosure of any social security
number by any state entity unless disclosure is permitted by
federal or state law, federal regulation, or by the holder of
the social security number.
FISCAL NOTE: No impact on state funds.
PROPONENTS: Supporters say that in this high-tech age, people
are concerned about who is getting their social security number
and doing who knows what with it. The state has an obligation
to protect its citizens from invasions of their privacy.
Testifying for the bill were Representative Gross; and Rick
Moore, Director of Information Systems, Department of Revenue.
OPPONENTS: There was no opposition voiced to the committee.
