Current Bill Summary

SB 64 - The act provides that the academic curriculum frameworks developed by the State Board of Education shall be subject to approval or disapproval by the General Assembly during the first regular session following the completion of the frameworks.

The act removes the current requirement that the State Board of Education adopt the work of consortia of other states in establishing standards and assessments. The act makes voluntary the current requirement that the State Board of Education contract with national experts to assist in developing the statewide assessment system.

Current law requires that the Commissioner of Education inform the General Assembly within six months preceding the implementation of the statewide assessment system and provides that the General Assembly may veto implementation by passing a concurrent resolution. The act requires the General Assembly to approve or veto the implementation by concurrent resolution within thirty legislative days.
