Current Bill Summary

SB 527 - This act makes it a crime to attack a police animal. A person is guilty of killing a police animal if he purposely causes the death of the animal while that animal is involved in an investigation, is apprehending a criminal, or is in the custody or under the control of a law enforcement officer or a corrections officer. Killing a police animal is a Class D felony.

A person is guilty of assault on a police animal if he purposely attempts to kill or cause serious injury to that animal. Assault on a police animal is a Class D felony.

This act is similar to SB 356 from 1995.
