SB 175 - This act would require an optometrist to be certified by the State Board of Optometry before being allowed to administer or prescribe any pharmaceutical to aid in the examination or treatment of the eye or adnexa. Each optometrist certified to prescribe pharmaceuticals for treatment, except those licensed after 12/31/90, must complete a course that includes at least 24 hours of training in the treatment of glaucoma.

Each optometrist shall complete a continuing educational course of at least 6 hours in the treatment of glaucoma, as a condition of renewal of certificate of registration until 12/31/99.

An optometrist may not perform surgery, including the use of lasers, for treatment of any disease or condition or for the correction of refractive error.
