Current Bill Summary

SB 1036 - Current law provides that certain county officials shall have their salaries set as a base schedule as provided in law and the salary commission shall be responsible for the computation of such salaries. This act provides that the salaries of county sheriffs shall also be set as a base schedule.

This act adds that upon majority approval of the salary commission, the annual compensation of a county sheriff may be increased up to $6,000. Additionally, the salary commission of any third class county may amend the base schedules for the computation of salaries for county officials to include certain assessed valuation factors.

Finally, this act repeals provisions relating to the computation of sheriffs' salaries based on percentages of associate circuit judges' salaries. This act provides that county sheriffs, other than sheriffs in first class counties, shall receive compensation as set forth in the schedule provided in the act and shall not, except upon 2/3 vote of all the members of the salary commission, receive an annual compensation less than the total compensation currently being received for the office of county sheriff.
