Sen. Mike Bernskoetter’s Legislative Column for the Week of Nov. 25, 2019

A Community to Be Thankful For

Over the past year, our community has had some trying times. Most notably, on May 22, Mother Nature unleashed a devastating tornado that ripped through our community. That was quickly followed up by heavy rains that flooded homes, businesses, cropland and more. Six months later, we’re still picking up the pieces, but we’ve been doing it together. In the immediate aftermath of these storms, our community came together. Volunteers arrived in droves to assist with the clean-up and rebuilding efforts. That’s the power of community. That’s something to be thankful for.

We’ve faced our share of challenges the past year, but we’ve also seen a lot of good that’s come out of our community too. Since the beginning of the year, I’ve had the honor to meet with and recognize some our community’s best, and I’ve highlighted some of them in this very column. I’ve met students from Owensville High School who are creating tomorrow’s solutions by advancing their STEM skills and making our schools safer. I’ve learned more about the important work done by dedicated Capital City CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) volunteers who serve abused and neglected children throughout our area. I’ve seen the generosity of students from Eugene High School who raised $9,300 for the Central Missouri Honor Flight and the incredible impact the simple act of giving can have through the Toys for Tots program. I’m thankful for each of these groups and the countless others who help make our community a great place to live, work and raise a family.

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, our community is one of the things that I am grateful for. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve such an outstanding, caring community. I am also thankful for the love and support I have received from family, friends and constituents as I finish out my first year serving in the Missouri Senate. It is an honor to be able to serve as your state senator, and I look forward to continuing to serve you in the year ahead. I hope you and your family have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving.
