Sen. Caleb Rowden’s Legislative Column for the Week of April 15, 2019

This week, the Missouri Senate passed Senate Concurrent Resolution 14, which would allow the state to issue bonds to pay for the repair or replacement of 215 bridges across the state. This legislation generates more than $300 million in funding to help address several critical areas of our state’s infrastructure network. Normally, road and bridge repair is paid for with revenue collected from the fuel tax, but Missouri’s infrastructure is deteriorating and the repairs could not wait. The Interstate 70 bridge at Rocheport needs to be replaced, and this proposal will help fund this important part of our community. Improving our state’s infrastructure is one of the governor’s priorities, so I am glad this measure passed the Senate and has been sent to the Missouri House of Representatives for their consideration.

On Thursday, April 18, I was proud to present resolutions to several 4-H students in our community. Members of the Boone County 4-H and the Cooper County 4-H received 1st place overall awards during the 2018 National 4-H Shooting Sports Competition. Haley Acton, from Hallsville, and Ryli Jetton, from Ashland, were part of the Missouri 4-H Air Pistol team that won third place at the competition. Kellen Smith, from Columbia, was a part of the Missouri 4-H Shotgun team that finished in seventh place at the event. In addition, I would like to congratulate Shelby Manning, from Pilot Grove, who participated at the event as a part of the Missouri 4-H Air Rifle team. I applaud and congratulate each of these students on their achievements, and I am proud of the way they have represented our community.

As tax season comes to a close, I wanted to provide you with information from the Department of Revenue. Earlier this year, the department released a letter with resources for taxpayers as they navigate the 2019 tax season. It includes helpful information for payment plans, the status of your state tax return and a withholding calculator to help you prepare for next year’s taxes.

Senator Rowden with members of Leadership Columbia.

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with members of Leadership Columbia. The Columbia Chamber of Commerce created this program to identify, cultivate and motivate future community leaders. Participants have the opportunity to network with Junior Leadership Columbia, interact with current community leaders, engage in leadership building activities and learn about a variety of industries including education, health care, media, social services, state and local government, life sciences and agriculture and arts and recreation. This program is an excellent way for young men and women to become involved in our community and encourage them to become community leaders. I was happy to meet with them to discuss the program and thank them for their excellent work in our community.
