HCS/HB 547 - Prior to August 28, 2021, circuit courts shall establish a treatment court division to provide an alternative for the judicial system to dispose of cases which stem from or are impacted by substance use. Additionally, this act provides that circuit courts shall establish a veterans treatment court prior to August 28, 2021, to provide an alternative for cases that stem from a substance use disorder, mental health disorder, or co-occurring disorder within military veterans or current military personnel, with a preference for individuals who have combat service. If it is not feasible to establish a veterans treatment court because of lack of resources, the court may refer veterans to any existing treatment court within its jurisdiction until a veterans treatment court is established.
