Senator Shalonn “Kiki” Curls to Host 12th Annual Kansas City Public Health and Safety Fair

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — State Sen. Shalonn “Kiki” Curls, D-Kansas City, will host the 12th Annual Kansas City Public Health and Safety Fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 21. The event, an effort to reduce health disparities in the African-American community through access to preventive resources, will take place at Arrowhead Stadium.

There is no cost to participate in the fair, which offers health screenings, student sports physicals, immunizations and more to those in attendance. Several safety devices, such as bicycle helmets and smoke detectors, will be handed out, and there will be food concessions and bicycle giveaways. The fair will also provide free diabetes and blood pressure screenings, dental checks, eye exams and breast exams.

For anyone who needs it, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority is offering free transportation to and from Arrowhead Stadium for the event. A list of pick-up times and locations is available at healthandsafetyfair.com/transportation.

Individuals whose income is under 185 percent of the federal poverty level can receive a car booster seat at the event with documentation to verify their income. Accepted documentation includes: a Temporary Assistance for Needy Families letter, a food stamp letter, Medicaid documentation, a Social Security letter, a pay stub and an unemployment determination letter.

Senator Curls expressed her joy in being able to bring the Public Health and Safety Fair back for another year.

“This fair has become one of my favorite yearly traditions,” Sen. Curls said. “We all want to live better, happier lives, and I believe this fair provides an opportunity for the residents of Kansas City to improve their quality of life. Studies show that preventive care is one of the best ways to maintain high levels of health and fitness. I hope anyone in need of a helpful hand, whether big or small, young or old, is able to attend this year’s event. We want everyone to know that Kansas City is a loving, caring community that is here to support its most vulnerable residents.”

Many Kansas City organizations have come together to support this year’s event, including the fair’s partners: the Kansas City Chiefs, the Kansas City Police Department, the Black Health Care Coalition, the Kansas City Area Transportation Authority and Truman Medical Centers.
