Sen. Dan Brown’s Legislative Column

brownOn Aug. 7, Missourians across the state will head to their polling places to cast their vote in this year’s Primary Election. According to the secretary of state’s office, there are more than 4 million registered voters in the state and countless other citizens who are eligible, but have not yet registered to vote.

Our democracy functions best when citizens play an active role in their government. The most powerful way to do this is at the voting booth. In a free country, there is no greater weapon against injustice, no greater tool for fixing the wrongs in our government, than a ballot. This is why Americans throughout our history fought so hard for this fundamental right. Every vote truly does count.

I strongly recommend all registered voters to head to their polling place on Aug. 7 and fulfill their civic duty. And for those individuals not yet registered, doing so has never been easier.

To register to vote, you must be 18 years old by Election Day, a U.S. citizen and a resident of Missouri. You can register by submitting a Missouri Voter Registration Application, on the secretary of state’s website. You can also register at your local election authority, county clerk and any Department of Motor Vehicles office or state agency that provides a service to the public. In order to vote in this year’s August election, you must register by Wednesday, July 11.

As always, I encourage my constituents to contact me throughout the year with comments, questions or suggestions by calling my office at (573) 751-5713.
