General Assembly Begins New Legislative Session
Greetings from Jefferson City as we complete the third week of the First Regular Session of the 99th General Assembly. After arriving back in the Capitol City on Jan. 4, the past few weeks have been filled with a flurry of events including the swearing in of new lawmakers and statewide officials, as well as the Inauguration of our 56th governor and the festivities that go along with that. We are off to a great start and I am optimistic that we will accomplish great things this year.
Last week we received our committee assignments and began hearings on proposed legislation. I’m happy to report I will be the Chair of the Senate Committee on Veterans and Military Affairs, Vice Chair of the Ways and Means Committee , and a member of the Small Business and Industry, Appropriations, Progress and Development and Commerce, Consumer Protection, Energy and Environment committees. I pledge to represent the interests of the constituents of the 27th Senate District while serving on these committees and as your senator.
I would like to make the focus of this week’s column to inform you about some of the bills I have sponsored for this legislative session.
Senate Bill 40 – would require children under the age of 18 to be prosecuted for most criminal offenses in juvenile courts unless the defendant is certified as an adult.
Senate Bill 41 – would provide protection for alternatives-to-abortion agencies.
Senate Bill 42 – would enact provisions relating to advanced practice registered nurses.
Senate Bill 103 – would require elder abuse investigators to provide specified written materials to alleged perpetrators.
Senate Bill 104 – would modify procedures in guardianship and conservator proceedings for incapacitated or disabled persons.
Senate Bill 105 – would require the Department of Revenue to enter into the Streamlined Sales and Use Tax Agreement.
Senate Bill 144 – would allow members of the National Guard and reserve components of the Armed Forces to deduct military income from their Missouri adjusted gross income.
Senate Bill 145 – would modify provisions relating to small water and sewer corporations.
These are only some of the bills I have sponsored this session. Next week I look forward to sharing with you the other legislation I have sponsored and the priorities I have for this Legislative year.
