Current Bill Summary

SB 809 - This act requires each public school to screen each student for dyslexia and related disorders at least once between when the student begins kindergarten and before the student begins third grade in accordance with State Board of Education rules. Each public school may also screen a student who is suspected of having dyslexia or a related disorder. Each public school must also screen each student at or above the third grade level who enrolls for the first time and who has not previously been screened. Each school district and each charter school must provide for the treatment of a student determined to have dyslexia or a related disorder.

This act is identical to SCS/SB 468 (2015), and is similar to HB 731 (2015) and HB 1255 (2015) and to a provision contained in SS/SCS/HCS/HB 2379 (2016), CCS/HCS/SB 635 (2016), CCS/SCS/SB 638 (2016), and SCS/SBs 1, 22, 49 & 70 (2015).
