Introduced

SB 258 - This act modifies the composition of the board of directors of the Kansas City School District. This act reduces the number of directors from nine to seven. Instead of three at-large directors, the board will have one at-large director. (Sections 162.459, 162.471 & 162.492)

This act creates a procedure for recalling school board members in the Kansas City School District when the district is classified as unaccredited. A recall election will be held at the next election upon the submission of a petition signed by at least twenty-five percent of the number of voters who voted in the last school board election.

If a majority of voters vote to retain the school board member at issue, the member shall remain in office and cannot be subject to another recall election during his or her term. If a majority of voters vote to remove the member, the vacancy will be filled by special election if the vacancy occurs more than six months before the next general municipal election or left vacant if the vacancy occurs less than six months before the next general municipal election. (Section 162.495)

This act is similar to SB 228 (2011).
