HCS/HB 217 – Current law provides that the school board of any school district that does not maintain an accredited school must pay the tuition and provide transportation for each resident student who attends an accredited school in another district of the same or an adjoining county. This act provides, that beginning in the 2010-2011 school year, any school district that refuses to admit a nonresident student from an unaccredited school district must provide the reason for the rejection to the student's parent or guardian in writing. The school board must cite the specific element of the district's policy on admissions that permits the district to refuse admittance to the particular student. The parent or guardian may appeal the non-admittance of such a student to the State Board of Education. The provisions of this act will not apply to any school district with territory in Jackson County or Howell County.
