Current Bill Summary

SB 1352 - This act establishes alternative charter schools.

The act asserts that alternative charter schools must possess a significant percentage of enrolled students identified with the risk factors associated with failure to persist to graduation. Further, the act lays out additional criteria for charter schools to be designated as "alternative."

The act lays out alternative methods of evaluating such schools and authorizes academic assessments that measure student performance on an individualized time frame, provided that alternative charter schools are not held to lower performance standards than other public or charter schools.

Further, the act incorporates the newly established alternative charter schools into current charter school law which regards priority of charter school applicants. Also, the act adds schools that meet the eligibility requirements established for alternative charter schools into the current law requirement that sponsors granting three or more charters grant at least one- third of such charters to schools that actively recruit dropouts or high-risk students as their student body and address the needs of such students.
