Senator John Cauthorn Reminds Missouri's World War II Veterans of Special Recognition Program
Enrollment Period in Missouri's World War II Medals Program Draws to a Close July 1

JEFFERSON CITY State Sen. John Cauthorn, R-Mexico, is actively encouraging Missouri's World War II veterans to participate in the state's special recognition program before the enrollment period ends on July 1, 2003.

Launched by a Senate bill in 2000, the World War II recognition program enables Missouri veterans honorably serving on active duty in the United States military at any time between December 7, 1941, and December 31, 1946, to receive a special medallion, medal and a signed certificate of commendation.

"These medals and certificates are ways for our state to thank the men and women who fought so bravely to keep this country a free democracy," Sen. Cauthorn said. "It's important for us to recognize all those who dedicated a portion of their lives to protect our nation's liberties."

During the 2002 legislative session, Sen. Cauthorn worked on the Senate committee extending the popular program by 18 months from the original end date of January, 2002. The committee also expanded program eligibility by allowing surviving spouses of World War II veterans to participate in the recognition program.

More than 40,000 Missouri World War II veterans have received state recognition since applications were first taken in 2001.

Information needed for the application form includes:

Veterans will also need to submit a copy of a Record of Discharge or Separation from Service form or Department of Defense Form 214 as military service documentation.

"The war in Iraq has reminded us once again of the importance of rallying around today's troops and those who served before them," Sen. Cauthorn said. "It's especially timely that we remind Missouri's World War II veterans qualifying for this recognition program to apply for the honor and accolades rightfully deserved and long due from this great state of ours."

Program applications can be obtained by writing to the Office of the Adjutant General, Attn: Director, WWII Veterans Recognition Program, P. O. Box 1808, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102 or by calling, toll-free, (866) 834-3431.
