Born July 27, 1956, in St. Louis. Educated in Silver Springs (Md.) public schools and the University of Maryland (B.S., government and politics). Earned certificate in paralegal studies; attended John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.

Married Ivie Lewellen in 1992. They have a daughter, Carol. He is a real estate salesperson and a paralegal with a law firm. Serves on the boards of : Mary Ryder Homes; State Democratic Party; National Black Caucus of State Legislators; William L. Clay Scholarship and Research Fund.

St. Louis Gateway Classic Sports Foundation Board of Directors; Missouri Legislative Black Caucus; St. Nicholas Catholic Church; 26th and 28th Regular Ward Democratic organizations; Democratic National Committee, convention delegate, 1988, 1992. Elected to the House: 1983 (special election), 1984 - 1990. Elected to the Senate: 1991 (special election), 1994.
