Omer H. Avery served the people of the 21st District (Callaway, Cole, Lincoln, Miller, Moniteau, Montgomery and Pike counties). Born in Troy, he graduated from the University of Missouri with Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws degrees. He practiced law in Troy and engaged in farming operations. He served in the infantry during World War I in 1918. During World War II, Senator Avery was in the Judge Advocate General’s Department and spent two years in overseas service in England and France. He was discharged with the rank of major. Senator Avery was elected to the House of Representatives in 1950, and re-elected in 1952 and 1954. He served as Majority Floor Leader in the House and was elected to the Senate in 1956. Senator Avery was re-elected to serve in the Senate in 1960, 1964 and 1968. (Democrat)
