Senate Bills Pertaining to State’s No. 1 Industry
Receive Governor’s Signature

JEFFERSON CITY – The governor recently gave his executive approval to two Senate bills relating to agriculture, the largest industry in the Show-Me State.

Senate Bill 16, sponsored by Sen. Brian Munzlinger, R-Williamstown, is a measure that exempts farm work performed by children under the age of 16 from certain child labor requirements, including prohibited hazardous jobs, such as operating and maintaining power-driven machinery, climbing ladders, operating vehicles and working with certain chemicals.  Young Missourians are only allowed to work on their own family farms or others, as long as they have the permission of their parents.

Another measure pertaining to agriculture recently received the governor’s signature.  Senate Bill 329, sponsored by Sen. Dan Brown, R-Rolla, is a simple food safety bill that modifies the definition of eggs by expanding the definition from only chicken eggs to also include turkey, duck, goose or guinea eggs that are intended for human consumption.  These eggs would be included in the inspection for cleanliness and appropriate temperature to help prevent disease.

Both pieces of legislation will take effect on Aug. 28, along with the majority of the bills delivered to and signed by the governor this year.  To read more about these and other measures that have been “truly agreed to and finally passed,” visit www.senate.mo.gov.
