Senate Bill Addressing Fireworks Becomes Law
Measure received unanimous support in the upper chamber

JEFFERSON CITY — Senate Bill 835, sponsored by Sen.  Mike Kehoe, R-Jefferson City, today (6-11) received the governor’s signature, enacting the measure into law.  The act updates references to fireworks classifications in the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) and removes references to American Pyrotechnics Association standards, the premier trade association of the fireworks industry.

More specifically, SB 835 references Title 49, Part 172, in the CFR that addresses the hazardous materials table, special provisions, hazardous materials communications, emergency response information, training requirements and security plans relating to certain classes of fireworks.  Provisions in the bill affected by these federal regulations include large fireworks displays.

The legislation mirrors Missouri’s statute regarding the size classification of larger commercial fireworks displays with federal standards.  Because the measure passed with an emergency clause, the bill became law upon receiving the governor’s signature, ensuring proper commercial fireworks displays for the Fourth of July holiday.
