Senate Measure Created to Protect Missouri Seniors and Disabled Receives Initial Approval

JEFFERSON CITY — Today (3-20), the Missouri Senate gave its first-round approval to a measure that would criminalize “undue influence” against the elderly and disabled in the state.  Undue influence is defined in Senate Bill 689 as a crime of financial exploitation committed against an elderly or disabled person, by taking advantage of the person’s vulnerable state of mind, neediness, pain or agony.

If a person is found guilty of financially exploiting these citizens, SB 689 would give the court authority to order the offender to compensate for the victim’s loss.

During floor debate, the bill sponsor explained that the legislation makes it easier to protect Missouri’s seniors and disabled against those wanting to take advantage and do harm financially to these citizens.

Another passing vote in the Senate would send SB 689 to the House for similar consideration.
