Education and General Government Work Groups Meet to Discuss Ways to Streamline Particular Areas in State Government

JEFFERSON CITY — Today, two “Rebooting Government” work groups met to consider ways to control, alter, or delete programs within their designated areas of discussion.  Complete audio of these working groups can be found on the Senate’s Rebooting Government website (www.senate.mo.gov/RebootMO).

The Education work group, chaired by Sen. David Pearce, R-Warrensburg, evaluated several of more than 70 citizen-submitted suggestions distributed to the committee by e-mail.  Other panel members include Sen. John Lamping, R-St. Louis; Sen. Jane Cunningham, R-Chesterfield; and Sen. Victor Callahan, D-Independence.

During the Missouri Senate’s Rebooting Government program last year, the Education work group identified approximately $66.7 million in taxpayer savings.  Areas of education considered by the committee this year included the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the state’s foundation formula, higher education, and K-12 education.

The work group on General Government and Office of Administration also met to discuss how they can reduce costs and maximize resources.  The panel, chaired by Sen. Jim Lembke, R-St. Louis, includes Sen. Luann Ridgeway, R-Smithville; Sen. Brian Nieves, R-Washington; Sen. Will Kraus, R-Lee’s Summit; and Sen. Timothy Green, D-Spanish Lake.

The work group considered fifteen subject areas, including budgets; city, county and federal government; the General Assembly; the governor’s office; permits and fees; travel; unemployment; and workforce investment regions.  Last year’s Rebooting Government efforts regarding general government and the Office of Administration identified $90.4-$133.4 million in taxpayer savings.

Citizens may also visit the Missouri Senate’s Daily Audio and Video Clips page to watch and listen to brief comments made by various members of these working groups.
