Legislative Column for the Week of March 3, 2014
Welcoming Visitors to the State Capitol

We’re blessed in Missouri to have one of the most beautiful state Capitols in the country. The nearly 100-year old structure dominates the Jefferson City skyline and looks out over the Missouri river. During the warmer months, countless school groups gather near the fountains and tour the many attractions inside the building. Every year, thousands of tourists, from all over the world, visit Jefferson City to see the Capitol.

Shown above, Sen. Wasson, center, welcomed students from the Missouri University of Science and Technology to the Capitol for Undergrad Research Day on Tuesday, March 4, 2014.

As a legislator, I spend six months out of the year in this building. This is why I’ve always welcomed visitors from back home. It’s wonderful to see people from my district and discuss their thoughts and ideas on our state.

To help facilitate these kinds of meetings, we regularly hold themed days for different industries and professions at the Capitol.

On Tuesday, we welcomed students from Missouri colleges for Undergrad Research Day at the Capitol. I had the pleasure of meeting with Brittney Abel, from Republic, who was with the group. Students and parents from TeenPact Leadership School were also in the building that day. I also spoke with representatives from the Christian County Library; Amy Fite, the Prosecuting Attorney for Christian County; and that evening, I attended the Missouri Health Care Association’s legislative reception.

Wednesday, doctors from across the state gathered in the Capitol rotunda for the White Coat Rally. It was wonderful to meet with these health care professionals and hear their thoughts on how we can improve and strengthen medical services in this state. The Home Builders Association from Springfield and the Red Cross both stopped by my office, and a group of local constituents also visited for the Alzheimer’s Association Annual Memory Day.

These days are a wonderful way for legislators to meet with various groups from our districts and get a feel for the concerns of our constituents. However, you do not need a specific event to visit me at the Capitol. I always welcome meeting with individuals from home. And, exploring the Capitol building is a great, educational way to spend a day.

If you’re coming to the Capitol, please contact my office. My staff can arrange a meeting, or give you information on how to take a guided tour of the building. My door is always open. Please feel free to contact me with any concerns or questions you might have regarding our state government.
