Senator Gina Walsh Announces Conservation Events in January for District 13 Residents

JEFFERSON CITY— State Sen. Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, urges citizens in the 13th District to participate in a number of free events held by the local Missouri Conservation Department in January, including multiple opportunities to view bald eagles, which regularly hunt above the waters of the Mississippi River this time of year.

“Even in the dead of winter, the natural beauty of our state is unequaled. In fact, these months give citizens the chance to see a lot of sights and wildlife that are completely unique to this time of year,” said Sen. Walsh. “I urge families and citizens to take advantage of the wonderful events our local Conservation Department puts together. Bundle up warm, take a blanket, and go see the winter splendor our state has to offer.”

The following events will be held at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in January:

Full Moon on the Confluence
Date: Friday, Jan. 17
Time: 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Ages: 7 and up

Discover nature by viewing the full moon’s light reflected on the confluence of America’s two largest rivers. The view is spectacular on a crisp winter night, sure to appeal to both amateur and professional photographers. Meet in Lot “N” for a short walk to the viewing area. If weather permits, participants will also take an extended walk through the woods. Reservations begin Jan. 3.

Golden Hour Eagle Watch
Date: Saturday, Jan. 18
Time: 6:45 a.m. to 8 a.m.
Ages: 15 and up

There’s no better way to greet the morning sun than by standing on the banks of the Mississippi River during what is known as the “golden hour.” Bring your camera to take advantage of this beautiful daily sight. An extra attraction this time of year is the likelihood of spotting a bald eagle as it hunts above the Mississippi River. Dress for the weather. Meet at the front entrance gate to the conservation area. Reservations begin Jan. 4.

Eagle Days at the Old Chain of Rocks Bridge
Date(s): Saturday, Jan. 18, and Sunday, Jan. 19
Time: 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., both Saturday and Sunday
Ages: All ages

It’s time again to join the annual viewing of eagles along the Mississippi River from the historic Chain of Rocks Bridge. Scopes will be stationed on the bridge so participants can get a close-up view of these amazing birds. The department will hold live eagle presentations every 20 minutes, allowing attendees to have their photo taken in an eagle’s nest. Dress for the weather and bring binoculars. No reservations required.

Eyes on Raptors
Date: Saturday, Jan. 18
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Ages: All ages

Missouri is home to numerous birds of prey—also known as raptors. Many of these birds gather at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Center this time of year. Join others in watching these impressive birds hunt for food in their natural habitat. Scopes will be set up at the confluence platform, near parking lot “N.” No reservations required.
