Sen. Gary Romine Encourages Local Citizens to Check the Unclaimed Property Database

JEFFERSON CITY— Senator Gary Romine, R-Farmington, urges local citizens to check the Missouri Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Database, which lists property held in perpetuity by the state, such as money from inactive bank accounts or whose owners couldn’t be reached after five years.

Unclaimed property is sent to the treasurer’s office from banks, government agencies and insurance companies. The department is legally required to hold the property until the owner claims it, however long that may be.

According to the State Treasurer, one in 10 Missourians has unclaimed property, with the average claim around $300.

“The state is currently holding more than $5 million belonging to around 10,000 constituents in my district.” said Sen. Romine. “It only takes a few minutes to check the site. It’s well worth your time.”

The Treasurer is also asking Missourians’ assistance this year in returning military medal turned over to the office from safe deposit boxes classified as unclaimed property. The
Treasurer currently holds 144 medals belonging to 58 owners. To see a list of those individuals with military medals, including the last known address of the owner, visit www.treasurer.mo.gov/military/.

To file a claim or check to see if you have unclaimed property, visit www.ShowMeMoney.com or write to State Treasurer Clint Zweifel, P.O. Box 1004, Jefferson City, Mo. 65102.
