Learn More About Your Local Government

As a state senator, and as a citizen, I’ve long believed government functions best when the public is actively involved. People need to know how the decisions made by their elected officials affect their lives. They need to know how to voice approval or opposition to proposals, and contact those who represent their voice in local, county, state and federal government.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of the exact role and duties of local officials, and how these individuals make policy choices that have far-reaching consequences for their city andtheir lives.

Even lifelong residents of our area might not know what municipal services are provided, how staff keeps the city running, or how the city appropriates funds for projects and operations. This is important knowledge.

To address this issue, Kansas City is hosting the Community Engagement University program, a free multi-week course that covers basic information of the city’s functions and operations. The program begins on Tuesday, Sept. 9, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., at City Hall, 414 E. 12th St.
Sessions will continue on Tuesday nights for eight weeks, until Oct. 28, at the same time and location.

The class size is limited to the first 30 residents. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions to get the most from the program, and a minimum of seven sessions are required to graduate with certification. Light refreshments will be provided.

This program is completely free and a wonderful opportunity to learn more about how your city functions. Participants will come away with a great understanding of local government, how local tax dollars are used, and how to serve their own communities and become more involved in improving the quality of life for all Kansas City residents.
