Legislative Column for the Week of June 3, 2013
Crop Certification Deadlines Approach

It seems like every day, someone comments about Missouri weather, and this past year has been no exception. The unpredictable weather has affected thousands of people, both across our state and across the nation.

Farmers are especially cognizant of changing weather conditions, and a few days of the wrong weather can wreak havoc on crops as well as livestock.

With this in mind, I’d like to inform all my farming constituents that the USDA Crop Certification Deadline is coming up on July 15, 2013. This deadline is statewide and will be the final day to report corn, soybean, grain sorghum and other Spring-seeded crops, as well as Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acreage.

Filing an accurate report is critical for eligibility in the FSA (Farm Service Agency) program to assess gains and losses, even if insured. Crop producers need to report losses insured through Federal Crop Insurance and the Noninsured Crop Disaster Assistance Program within 15 days of the disaster or as soon as the loss is apparent.

In addition, Prevented Planting must also be reported no later than 15 days after the final planting date. Final planting dates may be found through the USDA website at www.rma.usda.gov.

For questions, crop loss reports, or crop certification, call the Phelps/Crawford County FSA office at 573-364-2088, ext. 2.
