Department of Conservation to Host Local Events for
13th District Families in March and April

JEFFERSON CITY—State Sen. Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, urges constituents to consider attending a number of events held by the Department of Conservation in the 13th District in March and April, including an intro to geocaching, a treasure hunting game using GPS.

“Most families I know are on a tight budget these days, and it can be hard to find fun activities that are also affordable. Luckily, the conservation department is dedicated to providing fun, educational events at no cost to families,” said Sen. Walsh. “I strongly encourage constituents in our area to take advantage of these wonderful upcoming programs.”

The following events will be held at the Columbia Bottom Conservation Area in late March and April:

  • Pirates of Columbia Bottom: Intro to Geocaching
    Date: Saturday, March 30
    Time: 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.
    Ages: All ages

Families get to be modern-day pirates through the sport of geocaching, an adventurous outdoor activity that ties both technology and nature together. Participants will get a brief introduction on the basics of geocaching and then try their hand at hunting for hidden treasures in the area. GPS units are provided. Make reservations now.

  • Golden Hour at the Mississippi
    Date: Saturday, April 13
    Time: 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m.
    Ages: 15 and up

There’s no better way to greet the morning sun than by standing on the banks of the Mississippi River during what is known as the “golden hour.” Bring your camera to take advantage of this beautiful daily sight. Later, share some of your photos for possible display in the Visitor Center. Meet at parking lot “O” about 4.5 miles from entrance.  Make your reservations now.

  • Golden Hour at the Confluence
    Date: Saturday, April 20
    Time: 5:30 a.m. to 7 a.m.
    Ages: 15 and up

Photographers will have the opportunity to capture the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers during the early dawn hours. Bring your camera so you can share some of your photos for possible display in the Visitor Center. Meet at Confluence observation area lot “N” almost 5 miles from the entrance. Reservations begin April 6.
