Sen. Walsh Encourages Constituents to Take Advantage of Free Tax Services

JEFFERSON CITY—With the tax filing deadline less than a month away, state Sen. Gina Walsh, D-Bellefontaine Neighbors, urges constituents to take advantage of free tax preparation resources available, including free online tax services provided by the IRS and Free File Alliance, a non-profit coalition of industry-leading tax software companies. Taxpayers can also visit the local Missouri Department of Revenue tax assistance center in St. Louis for help in filing their state tax returns.

This year, any taxpayers with a 2012 Adjusted Gross Income of $57,000 or less may prepare, complete and e-file their federal tax return at absolutely no cost.

To begin, taxpayers should visit www.irs.gov/freefile, where they will find a list of participating companies. They can then either choose one that fits their needs, or utilize the “Help Me Find a Company” tool. After selecting a company, users will be transferred to the company's website to prepare, complete and electronically file their federal income tax returns.

“For many people, tax filing season can be an incredibly stressful time. Luckily, there are a number of free resources available to make filing your taxes a little easier,” said Sen. Walsh. “I strongly urge my constituents to look into electronic filing as an option this year. For most filers, it’s a quick and easy alternative. I also want my constituents to know that if they have any problems with their state tax returns, to call or visit our local DOR tax assistance center. The staff there is always more than happy to help.”

The Missouri Department of Revenue offers one-on-one help to Missouri taxpayers through various tax assistance centers located around the state.

The DOR tax assistance center in St. Louis is at 3256 Laclede State Rd., Ste. 101. Staff members can answer any taxation questions and will help citizens fill out their state tax returns. For more information, call (314) 877-0177.
