Paying it Forward in 2014

Have you made a New Year’s resolution yet? Many resolutions focus on our own goals, or those of our family. And while those goals are important in achieving success for ourselves, I hope you will join me in 2014 by paying it forward and focusing on helping those who are less fortunate.
In the 26th Senatorial District there are more than 110 non-profit groups and organizations that help those in need. There are food banks, domestic violence shelters and resources, youth services, in-home health services, services for the blind and disabled, and more.

How can we help these agencies fulfill their missions?

Volunteer your time. It is often said the best thing a person can do is to share their time, talent and treasures. No matter if you wish to volunteer an hour of your time or schedule a more long-term commitment, your efforts will be appreciated. Volunteers help provide respite care with in-home health agencies, tutoring with youth programs, help in food kitchens and more. Go to www.stlvolunteer.org to find volunteer opportunities near you.

Donate money or goods if you are able. No donation is too small. I have been told that $5 can provide: three nutritious meals to a homebound senior citizen, one child with breakfast for a week, a winter hat for a homeless person or a pair of house slippers for a low-income nursing home resident. A $10 donation can provide a hearing screening for a school-aged child, a flu shot for an infant in need, or even transportation to a medical appointment for a needy family. An even larger donation of just $25 provides two pair of glasses for a person in need, a fan for a needy family or one night of shelter for a homeless person. The impact of a simple donation can be felt throughout the community.

The United Way of Greater St. Louis offers assistance in finding services to assist people during times of need. By calling 2-1-1 or 1-800-427-4626, anyone can get information on support for children, families, seniors, those with disabilities, weather conditions, food pantries, medical and mental health services and more.

Every good deed begets another good deed. Just think of how blessed 2014 would be for all of us if we simply pay it forward one time. May the New Year be a one full of blessings for you and yours.
