Legislative Column for July 1, 2013
Happy Independence Day

Our country’s 237th birthday is almost here, and Missourians are preparing for road trips, family barbecues, and making plans for Fourth of July fireworks shows. Many of us look back on Fourth of July holidays with great memories of carefree summer days with our friends and family. Although Independence Day is a great time to relax and have some fun, it’s also important to remember the people who have fought to keep our country free, and to count our blessings to live in a nation where our dreams can reach as high as the fireworks bursting in the air.

Many people across the world do not have a say in their government and don’t have the opportunity to receive a good education or practice their religion of choice. We are able to enjoy the liberties we have today because of the men and women throughout history — from our country’s infancy through 2013 — who make sacrifices and put their lives on the line for the country they love. The flags that we see waving in front of our homes have a lot of meaning and are not just a decoration. They represent the character qualities we value in the United States — bravery, perseverance, freedom, equality, and individuality. In the United States, we are cornucopia of different backgrounds and cultures, and we embrace each person’s uniqueness and talent. Some of the most talented people in the world call the United States home, from scientists and astronauts to gifted musicians and artists. In our country, everyone has the chance to reach for the American Dream and earn a comfortable living for themselves and their families.

Please take a moment to say thank you to a member of our Armed Forces — whether he or she is retired or currently serving — and the people whose sweat and tears have helped build the foundation of our country. Without these citizens, our Fourth of July celebrations wouldn’t have the meaning that they have today. Also, please take some time to discuss safety with your children for Fourth of July festivities. Our young ones will be swimming and playing throughout the day, and it’s important that they stay out of danger. Fireworks safety is also important — you can read about how to stay safe around fireworks by visiting the Missouri Department of Public Safety’s “Fireworks Safety” page by visiting www.dfs.dps.mo.gov/safetytips/fireworks-safety.asp.

Have a wonderful Independence Day with your loved ones. God bless your family and God bless our great nation.
