The new deadlines for crop acreage reporting for 2014 are fast-approaching. Producers must now report all perennial and biennial forage crops, such as hay, pasture and rangeland, to their local Farm Service Agency (FSA) for the 2014 crop year by Nov. 15. For fall-seeded small grain crops, such as winter wheat, barley and oats, these reports are due by Dec. 16, as Dec. 15 falls on a weekend.
Producers with crop insurance must also report their forages and small-seeded grains to their insurance company.
The new dates were implemented in 2012 to align reporting deadlines for the FSA and the Risk Management Agency (RMA), which oversees the Federal Crop Insurance Program. The move was done to make reporting easier and standardized for FSA program and crop insurance purposes.
I encourage all of our local farmers to file their acreage reports by the new deadlines. These reports affect FSA program eligibility and filing late can result in fees.
