A career in public service is exciting, satisfying and allows you to provide much-needed services to people in your district. Being a state senator is just one of many public service career options.
Almost anyone can become a senator. The only requirements are that you must be at least 30 years old, a resident of Missouri for at least three years and a resident of your chosen district for at least one year.
One of the most important things, of course, is that you must be elected by your fellow citizens to serve as a state senator. If you are successful in getting elected, you would represent about 150,000 people. Your term of office would be four years, but you could run for re-election once for a total of eight years.
Although senators work year-round for their constituents, the most important part of their job occurs when the Senate convenes in January of every year. For five months, the Senate meets to consider legislation, some of which will become laws.
