Conserving Energy and Saving Your
Hard-Earned Dollars During This Winter Season
|
Our state is known for having some of the harshest winter weather conditions, from blistering cold temperatures to sleet, freezing rain, and ice that can build up so quickly that it causes treacherous conditions for Missourians all across our state. These winter months can cost citizens precious dollars to heat and maintain their homes. However, if you are prepared for the upcoming winter season, then you might be able to keep more of your hard-earned dollars in your wallet.
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) provides consumers with helpful tips that can lower their home heating costs as well as beneficial information on how to be energy efficient. If homeowners follow these simple, low-cost steps, they can put a significant dent in their utility bills.
Managing Missouri's Elements
- Caulk and weatherstrip doors and windows that leak and seal air where ducting, plumbing, light fixtures, or electrical wiring penetrates through exterior walls, floors, and ceilings.
- For a cheaper and less permanent alternative, use a heavy-duty, clear plastic sheet (sealed tightly) to cover the inside of your window frames during the cold winter months.
- Keep your drapes and shades on the south side of your home open during the day to allow sunlight to enter and keep those same window coverings closed at night to reduce chill.
|
Heating Your Home
- If you have gas appliances, look for blue flames — yellow flames mean your gas is burning ineffciently. Consult your appliance manufacturer or local utility company if adjustments are needed.
- Keep the damper closed when your fireplace is not in use.
- Replacing or cleaning your furnace filter once a month and having your furnace serviced before the winter months will ensure it is operating under best conditions for you. Also, clean the warm-air registries, baseboard heaters, and radiators as needed, making sure that they are not blocked by furniture, carpeting, or window coverings.
- Adjusting your thermostat to the lowest comfortable setting and installing a programmable theromostat will also keep more cash in your pocket.
