Just what does a state senator do?

That's a good question.

Most people think of senators in an official setting — debating bills on the Senate floor or working in their respective committees. However, this is only a small part of the job.

Lawmakers work hard to make our state a better and brighter place to live, work, and visit.

checkmark Your state senator works for the citizens of his or her district in many ways. He or she talks with state officials and constituents (the citizens that live in the senator's district) about problems or concerns in their district as well as across the state.
 
checkmark You might see your state senator giving speeches to schools, clubs, and different organizations in order to share with citizens what is going on in the State Capitol.
 
checkmark Your state senator spends much of his or her time talking with constituents about how proposed laws will affect the lives of citizens in our state.
 
checkmark Many state senators have full-time jobs back home in their Senate districts — some senators are farmers, lawyers, teachers, and business owners.
 
checkmark Your state senator can inform citizens about a particular bill's status, committee hearings, resolutions, floor activity, and may even arrange tours of the Capitol for groups and organizations who are planning a visit to Jefferson City to see their State Capitol.
 
checkmark Not only do senators make the laws, they also have to think about how Missourians will be impacted by the legislation they write and vote on.
