Edward E. Quick served the people of the 17th District, now part of the 12th District (Clay County). Born in Rich Hill, he attended school in Higginsville. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy at 17 years old and served honorably in Korea. Upon returning home, he became a firefighter in Kansas City, Missouri. He was elected to the City Council of Kansas City in 1975, 1979 and 1983. He was first elected to the Senate in 1984 and re-elected for an additional four terms. During this time, Senator Quick was chosen by his peers to serve as majority floor leader for the 89th General Assembly, president pro tem for the 90th General Assembly and minority floor leader for the 91st General Assembly.
