Prostate Cancer Pilot Program Proposal Heard in Senate Committee

JEFFERSON CITY—The Senate Health, Mental Health, Seniors and Families Committee today heard a bill that would establish a prostate cancer pilot program to provide screening, referral services, treatment and outreach to certain Missouri men.

Senate Bill 676, sponsored by Sen. Robin Wright-Jones (D-St. Louis), would, subject to appropriations, establish two prostate cancer pilot programs within the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, one located in the St. Louis area and the other in Pemiscot, New Madrid or Dunklin county. The program would fund prostate cancer screening and treatment services, as well as outreach and educational opportunities.

Once put in place, the program would be open to uninsured or economically challenged men who are older than 50 and uninsured or economically challenged men between 35 and 50 who are at high risk for prostate cancer.

The department would be required to report to the governor and General Assembly the number of individuals screened and treated by the program and any cost savings resulting from early treatment of prostate cancer.

Also considered in committee recently was a bill that would allow overseas voters—including military members—to request and send voter registration applications and absentee ballot applications electronically. Senate Bill 845 was heard in the Senate Financial and Governmental Organizations and Elections Committee on Monday.

Both bills will be eligible for floor debate pending committee approval.
