Senate Appropriations Committee Officially Begins Budget Work
 

 

JEFFERSON CITY—The Senate Appropriations Committee met yesterday for the first time since the governor unveiled his budget recommendations for the upcoming fiscal year 2011 budget during his State of the State address on Jan. 20. Committee members will continue to meet throughout this week and the weeks to come as they begin to develop their budget plan in conjunction with the House Budget Committee. The bills comprising the FY 2011 budget will eventually be debated, first in the House and then in the Senate (all appropriations bills originate in the House).

Yesterday’s (1/25) appropriations meeting included an overview of the governor’s recommendations for FY 2011, and well as statewide issues that the Legislature must address for FY 2011. The committee also discussed FY 2010 supplemental recommendations. Each session the Legislature considers funding needs that arise during the middle of the budget year and makes adjustments accordingly through supplemental budget bills.

The committee also met today (1/26) to discuss budget needs for the Department of Revenue. An additional meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 27 that will include discussion of the budget for the Department of Labor and Industrial Relations.

Fiscal year 2010 ends June 30, 2010. Fiscal year 2011 begins July 1, 2010, and runs through June 30, 2011. The Legislature must send a final state budget for FY 2011 to the governor by May 7, 2010.

Chairman Sen. Rob Mayer (R-Dexter), Vice-Chairman Sen. Kurt Schaefer (R-Columbia), Sen. Tom Dempsey (R-St. Charles), Sen. Jim Lembke (R-St. Louis), Sen. David Pearce (R-Warrensburg), Sen. Chuck Purgason (R-Caulfield), Sen. Scott T. Rupp (R-Wentzville), Sen. Frank Barnitz (D-Lake Spring), Sen. Joan Bray (D-St. Louis), Sen. Tim Green (D-St. Louis), and Sen. Yvonne Wilson (D-Kansas City) all serve on the Senate Appropriations Committee.
