Vehicle Inspection Insurance Bill Earns First Senate Nod

JEFFERSON CITY—The Missouri Senate today gave first-round approval to a bill that would protect vehicle owners from any possible damage inflicted to their vehicles during a routine state safety inspection.

Senate Bill 687 , sponsored by Sen. Robin Wright-Jones (D-St. Louis), would require official motor vehicle inspection and emission stations to have liability insurance to cover any possible damages to a vehicle during an inspection.

If there is no change in vehicle ownership, even model year vehicles must be inspected in even calendar years, and odd model year vehicles must be inspected in odd calendar years (unless the vehicles are exempt). Effective January 1, 2010, motor vehicles are exempt from the safety inspection requirement for the first five years following the model year of manufacture.

Also receiving an initial passing Senate vote yesterday (3/16) evening was SB 887 , sponsored by Sen. Kurt Schaefer (R-Columbia). The bill would add spice cannabinoids, commonly known as "spice" or "K2,” to the state’s list of Schedule I controlled substances.

Both bills need one more passing Senate vote before they may move to the House for further consideration.
